Family: Oxalidaceae
Habit: Small tree
Habitat: Native to the Moluccas Islands in Indonesia, but found throughout the world. Cultivated in Kerala.
Specialty : Fruit tree. The fruits contain a large amount of oxalic acid.
Ecological Importance:
Usage:
- Its fruits have sour taste.
- In southern Kerala, these pods are used as a substitute for Kudambuli and Valanpuli in fish curries and green pickles.
- Its juice is used to remove stains like rust from clothes. Also the juice is used to remove the claw from brass vessels.
- The leaves are ground into a paste and used for skin itching, swelling, rheumatism, mumps and wounds caused by the bites of poisonous animals.
- salting the fruit without cutting it, taking a quarter glass of the solution and drinking it every day is good for reducing blood fat. Iron tamarind wine is also good for reducing blood fat.
- Cucumber tree is known to be good for lowering blood pressure.
- Kidney damage has been reported due to the large amount of oxalic acid present in the consumption of bone marrow juice.
