Habit: Small tree
Habitat: Habitat: Found in semi-evergreen forests and moist deciduous forests. Cultivated commercially.
Special features: Native to the Western Ghats. It is a very fast-growing tree.
Ecological importance:
The larvae of the Ailanthus defoliator moth (Eligna narcissus) and Ailanthus webworm moth (Atteva fabricella) feed on its leaves.
Uses:
  • The sap extracted from the tree is used medicinally.
  • The wood is of industrial importance. It is used to make sandalwood and matchsticks.
  • It is also grown for propagating pepper vines.
